Weatherproofing Garden Furniture with Exterior Paint

Your garden furniture works hard. It hosts barbecues, morning coffees, and lazy afternoons. But British weather is relentless: rain, frost, and UV rays that fade colour. Without protection, wooden pieces crack, warp, and turn grey within a season. A little preparation and the right exterior paint can keep them lovely for years.

Why Wooden Garden Furniture Suffers in UK Weather

Wood expands and contracts as humidity changes. Rain soaks in, fibres swell; sun dries it out, they shrink. This movement causes splits and raised grain. Frost is worse: trapped water freezes, expands, and forces cracks wider. UV light breaks down lignin, turning wood silver and brittle.

Exterior paint solves this. It forms a flexible barrier that repels water while letting wood breathe. It blocks UV rays with pigments that don't fade easily. It also hides minor damage and gives a fresh colour. But you need a product specifically designed for exterior wood.

Choosing the Right Paint and Tools

Look for exterior wood paint. Water-based options dry quickly, have low odour, and clean up with soapy water. Oil-based paints are harder wearing but need white spirit and take longer to dry. For most furniture, a water-based exterior paint with a satin or gloss finish works brilliantly.

Check for microporous and UV-resistant claims. Microporous paint lets moisture escape while keeping rain out. You'll also need:

• Sandpaper in 80, 120, and 180 grits
• Exterior wood primer for bare timber
• Exterior wood filler for cracks
• Knotting solution for knots
• Synthetic brushes for water-based paint
• Small roller for flat panels
• Dust sheets, gloves, and a mask

Don't skip primer. It seals wood, blocks stains, and gives topcoat grip. Consider a wood hardener for soft sections.

Preparation: Cleaning and Sanding

Preparation is 80% of the work. Remove cushions, metal fittings, and glass tops. Wash with warm soapy water or a dedicated wood cleaner. Rinse and dry completely. Treat mould with a fungicidal wash, then rinse.

Sand the entire surface. Use 80-grit to strip old flaking paint, 120-grit to smooth, then 180-grit for a fine finish. Always sand with the grain. Wipe away dust. Fill cracks with exterior wood filler, dry, and sand flush. Brush knotting solution over knots.

Applying Paint: Thin Coats and Patience

Stir paint thoroughly — don't shake. Load brush a third up the bristles and tap off excess. Apply thin, even coats with the grain. Use long strokes and finish with a light "laying off" stroke.

Start with primer on bare wood, then two or three topcoats. Let each coat dry fully. Water-based paints need 2–4 hours; oil-based up to 24. Avoid direct sun, rain, or temperatures below 10°C. Humidity above 80% slows drying.

Pay extra attention to end grain and joints. These soak up water, so give an extra coat. Remove metal bolts before painting and coat with rust-resistant primer before refitting.

Sealing and Extra Defence

Once paint is fully cured (about a week), add a clear exterior sealer for extra protection. This is useful on table tops and armrests. A sealer wears away instead of your paint. For unpainted pieces, exterior wood oil works well but needs yearly reapplication.

Fit plastic or felt glides to legs to stop them sitting in puddles. Raise furniture off the ground using bricks or decking feet. Check metal fittings for rust. Store cushions and parasols indoors.

Seasonal Care and Storage Tips

Inspect furniture every spring and autumn. Touch up chips and cracks straight away — a small repair now prevents a big one later.

Clean with mild soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid pressure washers, which force water into wood. In winter, cover with a breathable furniture cover. Plastic tarpaulins trap condensation and cause mould; choose woven fabric that lets air circulate.
